Surrounded but the rivers Garonne und Dordogne 400.000 hl/year are produced on 4.000 ha. With this area Entre-Deux-Mers is the largest in Bordeaux. Cheap, sweet or semi-sweet wines used to be the concentration, but since the 80's more attention is being given to dry, fresh everyday wines. The quality is good, though not exceptional.
Only white wines have the right to the name. Red wines are only allowed to carry the names Bordeaux or Bordeaux Supérieur. Next to the name Entre-Deux-Mers there are several smaller districts with own names.
The soil varies in this large area, though sand, clay, and gravel dominate. Their components vary according to region. Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle und Ugni Blanc are the white vines that are cultivated. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot und Cabernet Franc are the red vines. An optimal percentage of fruit is gained by the boiling in a tempered refined steel tank.
