In 1829 the vines were brought to West Australia by the Parmelia. The variable landscape is beneficial to the red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon.

The first vines were planted in what is today Swan Valley. Thomas Waters founded the state's first wine house in 1830. The company called Olive Farm is today one of the country's oldest. sandalford was founded in 1840 by John Septimus Roe, whose family is still involved with the company today. Both founders of Australian viniculture were passengers on the Parmelia. The region was begun to be seriously expanded in the 1960's.

The landscape is pretty variable - fertile ground in the Coastal Plains - mountain region in the Lower Great Southern. Swan Valley is a very beautiful river valley, sand and swampy clay soils dominate in the Margaret River area. The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean. The summers are long and dry, there is lots of rain in the winter. Plenty of rain is what lets this region survive without artificial irrigation, and that's not necessarily to be taken for granted in Australia.

Next to a very good Cabernet Sauvignon many other vines are processed and all types of Australian wines are made here. Among the vines raised are (red) Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Merlot; (white) Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Traminer, Sémillon, Verdelho, Rhine Riesling, and Muscat.
